Bhutto Assassinated

Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated in Pakistan. I have never been a fan of Ms Bhutto but am saddened by the manner of her death. This is sad day for all Pakistanis hoping for a more stable and democratic set-up in the country. Koonj has summed up my feelings in her post here.

We should seriously consider whether a ‘democratic set-up’ will ever work in a country like Pakistan. We all want to see stability, justice and social order , but these arn’t necessarily guaranteed by adopting Western style democracies; some gloves just don’t fit.

Everyone is welcome to their opinion of course but one should be careful of letting current frustrations cloud one’s views. “Democratic set-up” does not have to be equated with current Western ideologies either. But what are the alternatives? Do we have a workable answer? Perhaps we’re not interested in finding an answer anyway.
