Someone asked, “What is the Way?” I said,
“This way is to abandon desires.”
Oh lover of the King! Know that your way is to
seek the pleasure of that Generous Lord.
When you seek the Beloved’s desire and
pleasure, seeking your own desire is forbidden.
The spirit will be totally transformed into love
for the Beloved, for the ascetic cell of the noble travelers is
Love.
His Love is not less than the top of some
mountain — His Love’s mountaintop is enough for me!
The cave where you can find the Friend is
Love — then the spirit will gain the adornment of Love’s
beauty.
Whatever purifies you is the correct road — I will
not try to define it.
Be silent and hold fast to the shaykh-Love — for
in the two worlds, he is your leader.

” O heart clasp onto the person of the Sultan of Saints

I mean, Hussain ibn Ali, the heart and soul of the Saints”.

Hz Shah Niaz BeNiaz (ra)

This is a haunting rubai from the great Sufi saint Hz Sultan Bahu (ra). When sung the sound of the elongated HU* at the end of each line is especially moving.

Ay tan Rabb sache da hujra te pa faqeera chati, HU

na kar mintan Khawaj Khizr diyan tere andar aab hayati, HU

shawq da dewa baal hunairey matay lab peye wast karati, HU

maran tu aggay mar rehe Bahu jinnan ramz puchate , HU.

(This body of yours is the True Lord’s dwelling, so mystic look inside! HU

Don’t beg favours of Master Khizr, the water of life is within you. HU

Illuminate the darkness with the lamp of longing, then perhaps you’ll find what you’ve lost. HU

They die before they die, Bahu, those who understand the riddle of Truth. HU)

* Hu meaning He stands for the Divine Essence.

Aziz Mian was probably the first qawwal I ever heard as a child. Although I doubt whether I understood much but I loved his qawwalis nevertheless. This qawwali shows how carefully he selected his verses and how profound in meaning they in fact were. Aziz Mian loved to play around with words and meanings and this certainly shows him at his best. Listen and enjoy.

Here’s a nice version of the celebrated naat by Hz Sayyid Mehr Ali Shah (ra) of Golra Sharif.

Jo sar pe rakhne ko mil jaye naal-e-paak-e-Huzoor
to phir kehenge ke haan taajdar hum be hein

(If ever I were granted to place the noble sandal on my head
I would then proclaim: yes, I am indeed crowned king)

The Shadhili hadra in Damascus in the presence of Shaykh Abd-ar-Rahman as-Shaghouri (ra) who passed away in 2004. I will post something on this great Arif and Murshid later insha’Allah, for now just enjoy the hadra which he loved himself. In the video you see some of the ulema of Damascus such as Shaykh Abd- al-Aziz al-Khateeb al-Hasani in the front rows.

The Inner Garment of Love

A soul which is not clothed
with the inner garment of Love
should be ashamed of its existence.

Be drunk with Love,
for Love is all that exists.
Where is intimacy found
if not in the give and take of Love.

If they ask what Love is,
say: the sacrifice of will.
If you have not left your will behind,
you have no will at all.

The lover is a king of kings
with both worlds beneath him;
and a king does not regard
what lies at his feet.

Only Love and the lover
can resurrect beyond time.
Give your heart to this;
the rest is second-hand.

How long will you embrace
a lifeless beloved?
Embrace that entity
to which nothing can cling.

What sprouts up every spring
will wither by autumn,
but the rose garden of Love
is always green.

Both the rose and the thorn
appear together in spring,
and the wine of the grape
is not without its headaches.

Don’t be an impatient
bystander on this path -
by God there’s no death
worse than expectation.

Set your heart on hard cash
if you are not counterfeit,
and listen to this advice
if you are not a slave:

Don’t falter on the horse
of the body; go more lightly on foot.
God gives wings to those
who are not content to ride an ass.

Let go of your worries
and be completely clear-hearted,
like the face of a mirror
that contains no images.

When it is empty of forms,
all forms are contained in it.
No face would be ashamed
to be so clear.

If you want a clear mirror,
behold yourself
and see the shameless truth
which the mirror reflects.

If metal can be polished
to a mirror-like finish,
what polishing might the mirror
of the heart require?

Between the mirror and the heart
is this single difference:
the heart conceals secrets,
while the mirror does not.

“Love is a Stranger”

In this beautiful Naat “Taiba” refers to the blessed and radiant city of Madina (upon her Master be the Peace and Blessings of God eternally). It recounts the yearning of the heart for that “heart of hearts”.This version is in two parts by a traditional Syrian group of munshideen ( singers of spiritual poems) and shows that this sufi tradition is still very much alive in the Arab world too.
