کہاں سے سیکھی ہے تو نے اے اقبال یہ درویشی

کے چرچا ہے بادشاؤں میں تیری بے نیازی کا

Today is the birthday of Hz Allama Iqbal, poet, philosopher and mystic and one of  the founding fathers of Pakistan. Despite recent attempts to “shelve” his teachings by some recent governments that feel that he is not liberal enough for their liking, he continues to be an inspiration to millions.

Came across this recently and liked it so I thought I’d share it with friends. The poet Noorani Mian hails from the famous spiritual line of Kichocha Sharif in India. Part 1 is found below and Part 2 here.

Listen, O drop, give yourself up without regret,
and in exchange gain the Ocean.
Listen, O drop, bestow upon yourself this honor,
and in the arms of the Sea be secure.
Who indeed should be so fortunate?
An Ocean wooing a drop!
In God’s name, in God’s name, sell and buy at once!
Give a drop, and take this Sea full of pearls.

If ten lamps are present in one place,
each differs in form from another;
yet you can’t distinguish whose radiance is whose
when you focus on the light.
In the field of spirit there is no division;
no individuals exist.
Sweet is the oneness of the Friend with His friends.
Catch hold of spirit.
Help this headstrong self disintegrate;
that beneath it you may discover unity,
like a buried treasure.

lo Madinay ki tajalli se lagay huwe hein

dil ko ik matlaya e anwar banay huwe hein

sharam e isyan se nehein samane jaya jata

ye be kaya kam hai tere sheher mein ayay huwe hein

hazir o nazir o noor o bashar o ghaib ko chor

shukr kar woh tere aybon ko chupay huwe hein

Celebrate! The month of fasting has come.
Pleasant journey to the one
Who is the company of the fasting.

I climbed the roof to see the Moon,
Because I really missed fasting
By heart and soul.

I lost my hat while looking at the Moon.
the Sultan of fasting made me drunk.

O Muslims, I have been drunk
since that day I lost my mind.
What a beautiful fortune fasting has.
What a wonderful glory.

There is another secret moon
Besides this one.
He is hiding in the tent of fasting
Like a Turk.

Anyone who comes
To the harvest of fasting in this month
Finds the way to this Moon.

Whoever makes his face
Resemble pale satin
Wears the silk clothes of fasting.

Prayers will be accepted in this month.
Sighs of the one fasting pierce the sky.

The person who sits patiently
At the bottom of fasting’s well
Owns the love of Egypt, like Joseph.

O the word which eats the Sahur* meal,
Be silent so that anyone
Who knows fasting will enjoy fasting.

Come, O Shems, the brave one
Of whom Tebriz is proud.
You are the commander of fasting’s soldiers.
