I was reminded by a comment by Michael Tiernan on the previous post on the Discipline of the Abdal about my intention to do a post on this valuable book on the basic discipline of the Sufi path. I attended Stephen Hirtenstein’s talk on the book recently at Oxford and have just finished reading the text itself. It goes without saying that it is excellent as are all the works of the Shaykh al-Akbar. Stephen Hirtenstein has provided helpful notes and a translation from a related chapter of the Futuhat in an appendix. The accompanying Arabic text is a delight to read and is an admirable example of Shaykh al-Akbar’s very dense and compact style of expression. The book can be purchased either from the publishers here or from the Ibn Arabi Society here.
